Hepatitis usually is caused by a viral infection, resulting in inflammation of the liver.
Womenshealth.gov says common ways of contracting viral hepatitis include:
- Eating food that has been contaminated by someone with hepatitis.
- Close contact with infected household members or infected sexual partners.
- Contact with contaminated diaper changing areas that haven’t been properly cleaned.
- Consuming uncooked or undercooked shellfish that was pulled from contaminated water.
