Health Tip: Getting Over Laryngitis

By on June 8, 2010

Laryngitis occurs when the voice box (larynx) becomes swollen or infected, causing hoarseness or loss of voice.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine suggests how to manage and recover from laryngitis:

  • Try not to talk, allowing your vocal cords to rest.
  • Run a humidifier to ease a sore, scratchy throat.
  • Take a decongestant.
  • Take a pain-relieving drug.
  • Ask your doctor before you take an antibiotic, which won’t help the most common cause of laryngitis — a virus.
