Health Tip: What May Trigger a Hernia

A hernia occurs when a sac formed by the abdominal-cavity lining pushes through the abdominal wall.
The U.S. National Library of Medicine says typical causes for development of a hernia include:
- Having chronic constipation, which causes a person to push too hard during a bowel movement.
- Having a chronic cough.
- Having cystic fibrosis.
- Having an enlarged prostate and pushing to urinate.
- Being overweight.
- Lifting something heavy.
- Having undescended testicles.
