Health Tip: Use Fireworks Safely

(HealthDay News) — Fireworks can make for a spectacular celebration, but they can also cause serious injury.

The Nemours Foundation offers these firework safety precautions:

  • Never let children play with fireworks.
  • When you purchase fireworks (never attempt to make your own), make sure you choose only ones that are legal. They should be labeled with the manufacturer’s information. Illegal ones often aren’t labeled.
  • Only use fireworks outdoors, and make sure you have a hose and water bucket close by.
  • Never try to reignite a dud.
  • Never fool with fireworks or aim them in the direction of another person.
  • When lighting fireworks, don’t keep them in your hand.
  • Set off fireworks away from homes, brushes and shrubs that could catch fire. Only light one at a time.
  • Once fireworks have gone off, soak them in a bucket of water before disposing of them in the trash.
