Health Tip: Is Your Child Ready for Potty Training?

(HealthDay News) — There are many factors to think about when it’s time to consider toilet training a child.

The University of Michigan Health System says your child should:

  • Seek independence, praise and pleasing you.
  • Mimic what older children and adults do, particularly when it comes to bathroom habits.
  • Have the communication skills and motor skills required to pull pants up and down and get to the potty.
  • Be able to go long stretches with a dry diaper, and have bowel movements on a regular schedule.
  • Be able to show you (by language, facial expressions, etc.) that he or she needs to use the toilet.
