Violence in movies…and how it impacts children who watch, has often been studied.But now researchers are focusing on the combined influence of violence and other risky behavior when lumped together in one film. Does the combination of sex and violence influence susceptible young viewers?Nearly 400 films rated PG-13 and R released from 1985 to 2010 were reviewed. The analysis showed the levels of violence were virtually the same in PG-13 and R rated films, with approximately 90-percent of them having the main character involved in at least one violent scene. 77-percent of the films also had the main character involved in at least one other high risk behavior.Interestingly, tobacco use in films decreased dramatically during the 25 year period, and even alcohol use declined a little.So what’s it mean to the young viewer? The authors believe certain teens, particular those they describe as “sensation seekers”… are drawn to these films and may be prone to modeling their own actions regarding sex, drugs and violence after the movie characters.I’m Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay TV with the news doctors are reading health news for healthier living.
