Health Tip: Keep Your Pet Safe This Winter

(HealthDay News) — Cold weather dangers — such as ice-melting chemicals and sleet — can affect your pet’s health, says the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

To help keep your pet safe this winter, the ASPCA urges you to:

  • Remove snow between your pet’s foot pads. Towel dry your pet after walks.
  • Wash and dry your pet’s feet and stomach to remove ice, salt and chemicals.
  • Never shave your dog down to the skin during the winter.
  • Avoid bathing your pet during cold spells.
  • Keep coolant and antifreeze far away from your pets. It is lethal.
  • Feed your pet a little extra during the cold months.
  • Make sure your pet has a warm place to sleep.

The ASPCA says if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet. Keep your pet inside.
