(HealthDay News) — If your doctor has recommended surgery as a solution to chronic back pain, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions to aid in your recovery:
- If your incision continues to drain, place a bandage over it. If it’s clean and dry, you don’t need to bandage it.
- Expect that you may not have a big appetite. But try to eat healthy meals and drink a lot of fluids. Ask your doctor if you need a vitamin or mineral supplement.
- Follow your doctor’s suggested exercise program. It will help you get back your stamina and feel stronger. Start out with walking for light exercise; eventually, your doctor may recommend additional activity such as swimming, riding a stationary bike or using a treadmill.
- Lose any excess weight to help prevent future back pain.
