(HealthDay News) — Laxatives are medications usually purchased over-the-counter to help treat constipation.

The American Academy of Family Physicians says side effects are rare if laxatives are taken as their labels direct, but sometimes they can trigger:

  • Diarrhea.
  • Nausea.
  • Cramps.
  • Gas.
  • Bloating.
