(HealthDay News) — Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) describes a host of conditions that cause the bowel’s nerves and muscles to function abnormally.

The U.S. National Women’s Health Information Center offers this list of common IBS warning signs:

  • Abdominal cramps.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Abdominal bloating.
  • Gas.
  • Mucus in the stools.
  • A change in bowel habits.
  • Persistent constipation or diarrhea.
