Healthy cholesterol levels are an important part of any prescription for preventing heart disease so are Americans making progress lowering their numbers?A new government report shows on average, nearly 70-percent of American adults regularly check their cholesterol levels. From 2011 to 2012, 12.9% of people 20 and older had high total cholesterol that’s about the same number as the last survey.A higher percentage of women than men had high cholesterol 14.4 percent compared to 11.1 percent.A highlighted change for this report is the percentage of adults with low HDL cholesterol…the good kind. 17% of adults had low HDL cholesterol… that’s down 20-percent since 2009 to 2010.All adults are encouraged to have their cholesterol tested at least once every five years.
