(HealthDay News) — Wisdom teeth may not have to be extracted, unless they begin to cause problems.

The American Dental Association says you should visit your dentist if your wisdom teeth are causing or contributing to:

  • Pain or discomfort.
  • An infection.
  • Development of a tumor or cyst.
  • Damage to nearby teeth.
  • Development of gum disease.
  • Tooth decay.
