(HealthDay News) — Rickets, a Victorian-era disease marked by weak, deformed bones and caused by a deficiency in calcium, phosphorus or vitamin D, has made a comeback in recent years.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons cites these risk factors for rickets in children:
- Insufficient calcium in the diet.
- Insufficient exposure to sunlight.
- Dark skin.
- A poor diet.
- Lactose intolerance.
