(HealthDay News) — Many teens are just starting to figure out how to make healthy food choices. This is a great time for parents to help them learn how to read food labels.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggests that parents:
- Teach teens to focus on choosing foods that are high in fiber and protein, and low in sugar and salt.
- Remind teens about limiting meals to appropriate portion sizes.
- Discuss how packaging can be misleading, and how to avoid unhealthy fare.
- Suggest electronic apps that focus on getting enough nutrients in every meal and snack.
